Looking for resources for medical students

Medicine students need to find the best, most relevant information and evidence to complete their assignments.

Keele University buys a wide range of different types of resources to give you access to good quality information.

Books and eBooks

You can borrow books and access ebooks by searching for your topic on Library Search. Library Search holds information about all the books / ebooks available to Keele students. You can borrow books from either the Campus Library or Health Library.

Read our blog post for instructions on how to read an ebook on Library Search.

Running a simple search on Library Search

You can also run quick, simple searches on Library Search for articles and journals, as well as books / ebooks. The results may include a wide range of content as Library Search includes resources across the many disciplines covered by Keele courses.

See our blog post for instructions on running simple searches.

See our blog post for help using filters to focus results.

Completing a detailed search on Core Databases

When you need to complete a detailed search for articles on a topic, use the healthcare-specific databases. These will search across good quality journals and have specific filters to help you to focus your results. They also have tools allowing you to save searches and set alerts for new content.

Healthcare-specific databases include Medline, PsychInfo and Web of Science. A full list of databases is available on the Medicine databases page.

Access Resources from home

You will need to log in to access Keele resources if you are studying off-campus. You use your Keele email address and password. See the Campus Library page for instructions on how to log in.

NHS Resources

When you are on placement in your third year, you might find it useful to use some NHS resources. Campus University will set up an NHS/HEI-based OpenAthens account to help you to access NHS-based resources. Of interest will be:

BMJ Best Practice – a clinical decision support tool to help junior clinical staff, available via your NHS/HEI OpenAthens username

BNF / BNFc – key reference text for medicines and drugs; available online without login

Embase database – medical-specific database specialising in pharmaceutics; available from the Ovid platform via NHS/HEI OpenAthens log in
