Accessing NHS eJournals

eJournals provide you with the latest research as well as articles to support best practice and your professional development. The Health Library and NHS England subscribe to a wide range of healthcare-based journals. How to access Journals Most of our journals are available online. You will need a username and password to access them. This is your NHS OpenAthens username . To register for your username complete the online form . Browse for a journal title Use Browzine to browse for journal titles. This tool contains hundreds of journal titles, including the titles we subscribe to. Search for a title, view the issues and link directly to our subscription. It’s the easiest way to get to our content. For any titles or issues not included in our subscription you will be prompted to make a request – this is sent to our team and they will try to get a copy for you. They may be popular titles, or subject specialist, or especially for a particular group of healthcare workers. But what are journals and why do you need them? Journals are the source of articles written by academics, researchers and experts in their subject areas. They are published on a regular basis as an issue , in print and/ or online. Most of our journals are available online. You should read articles on a regular basis to stay up-to-date with changes and research in your area of practice, to support your professional development or to find good quality information for your studies. Search the NHS Hub for articles full-text

 Got an article title you want to find but don’t have the full reference? Maybe a colleague has told you about a good article to read but they don’t have all the details. How can you find it? Here is an example: Health-related quality of life in youth with type 1 diabetes by Shapira Search for the full-text by article title 1. Go to the Health Library web page Articles for the NHS . 2. Page down to the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub section. 3. Enter your article title in double quotes. 4. Click the “Search” button. You will be taken to the Hub search results article page.  What if the search returns lots of results? What can you do? Using the DOI / PMID tool to find NHS full-text articles

 Have you got an article reference and want to find the full-text? Does your reference include the DOI or PMID? DOI is the digital object identifier. This is a code which uniquely identifies an article. So, no matter which platform the article is hosted on or even if the publisher changes, the article will have the same DOI. PMID is the pubmed identifier. This is a reference number for the article held on the Pubmed database. You will always see a PMID for an article if you are searching on Pubmed. Here is an example of a reference: Ultrasound-guided genicular nerves block vs. local infiltration analgesia for total knee arthroplasty: a randomised controlled non-inferiority trial, Cuñat et al Anaesthesia, 2023 Feb;78(2):188-196. doi: 10.1111/anae.15909 PMID: 36351436 .
