Register for Your NHS Athens Account

NHS staff can register for an NHS Athens account so that they can log on to online resources purchased by the NHS and your library service.

An Athens account is also called an openathens account (they changed the name but we are slow to catch on).

Register for your Account
To register you need to complete the online form.

Screen-shot of the Athens registration form

1. Enter your name

2. Enter your NHS-based email address
Using your NHS address will allow the system to automatically approve you. Otherwise your account will be placed on a list for approval. You wont be able to use resources until your account has been approved. Do not use a personal email address such as gmail or yahoo. We will not be able to verify this or approve the account.

3. Enter your organisation
This is the NHS trust that you work for. You should see suggested options to select once you start typing. GPs and CCG staff should try entering “Staffordshire” to find a group level organisation that covers those staffing groups.

4. Enter your workplace details
These details are used to verify that your application is valid. Please do not put a home address.

5. Select position duration
If you select “Temporary” you will be prompted for an end date. Enter the date that your contract ends at the organisation your have selected.
All accounts are given an end-date and you will be prompted to renew your account when the date approaches.

6. Confirm you accept the terms and conditions.

7. Click the “Register” button to submit your request.
Once you have submitted your request you will be sent an email. Your username will be set up and you need to complete the instructions in the email to create your password. Please do this promptly as your username may be deleted if not activated with a password.
If your account is awaiting approval you will be informed; once it is approved you will be sent an email.

If you have any queries or need any assistance you can contact staff at the Health Library or see our Athens page online.
