Full-text Options on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

  Easily link to full-text articles from your search results list on the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub. There are a range of options that may be presented to you depending on the availability of the article.   Make sure you have logged in to NHS OpenAthens to ensure all your resources are included in the search results. Our blog post NHS OpenAthens Login on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub shows you how. In the new interface of the K&L Hub you may be presented with a range of access options. They are listed below. Note that the options presented will depend on the availability of the article as open access or subscribed, and whether it is available within the ebsco databases or not. You will always get the option to request an item if you need to request an inter-library loan or just in case you have problems reaching the full-text. Use natural language on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

  Do you feel confident searching databases? Do you struggle to find precise search terms and combinations? Don’t worry! You can use natural language to search on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. You can run simple searches on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub to explore a wide range of resources. What do I mean by natural language? Well, it’s using sentences and words that you use in conversation, as if you were talking to a colleague. How can you do it? Go to the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. Enter your question in the search box – just like you were asking a colleague. Tick the natural language option and click search. Articles matching your question will be listed in the results list. Want to know what it searches for? Just click the option Show refined query and a pop-up box will show you how the Hub has constructed the query to run against the resources. Link to databases on the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

  Although the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub is great for running simple searches, you might want to complete more detailed searching on a database. You can link to the databases straight from the Hub. Simply search for the database name and you’ll get an information card for that database, with a link straight to the database, saving you lots of time. Typical databases to look for are Cinahl, Medline, Emcare and Embase. BMJ Best Practice filter on the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub

 Get the best evidence for a range of conditions and disease by searching the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and limiting the results to BMJ Best Practice. Use the new BMJ Best Practice filter.   You can select from a wide range of filters to focus your search results, such as full-text, peer reviewed, publication date, major subject heading, publisher and content provider. Now added to this list is BMJ Best Practice. This gives you an easy way to view BMJ Best Practice content.  Explore NHS resources and discover the evidence you need by searching the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub. Execute simple searches across a wide range of resources, select filters to focus your results and link easily to full-text. To get the best experience searching the K&L Hub make sure you log in to NHS OpenAthens first. Log in to NHS OpenAthens on the K&L hub to ensure that you get access to the resources purchased by your organisation, can easily access full-text and link to more support provided by the Health Library. The log in link is available at the top of the page, on the grey bar. Click the text and log in when prompted. Update to Ebsco databases search interface

Ebsco databases such as Cinahl and Medline are essential resources to search to get articles for your assignments. Make sure you are up-to-date with the recent changes and are making the most of this valuable resource. Accessing multiple resources from multiple organisations

 Are you a Keele student but also an NHS member of staff? Are you an NHS member of staff completing a university course? Do you have a membership for a royal college or society? A word about working with multiple resources, from multiple organisations… Generally, we advise you to use all the resources available to you. This includes resources from the university but also resources you can access as NHS staff and possibly resources you can access as part of your membership to colleges or societies. However, searching lots of different resources can throw up some problems. The main problem is that resources can get confused if you are using different logins to access different resources. Many resources try to pick up your previous login credentials which may not be relevant for that resource. This can result in errors and difficulty logging in. So, what can you do... Training: Critical Appraisal - mitigating bias in health research

Critical Appraisal is a key skill but why is it so complicated?  This 45-minute course run by UHNM and Keele Librarians will help build your confidence in appraising a RCT. By going through key strategies researchers use to mitigate bias will help you understand common themes that feature in quantitative studies. Such as selection bias, dealing with confounders, attrition, publication bias and data dredging. This session will touch on basic statistics, the use of P values, CI and consider MID/MICD in the paper. Further support materials and signposting will also be provided. Training: Exploring the new NHS Knowledge & Library Hub from Ebsco

Ebsco have 2 sessions in January to help you to get to grips with the NHS Knowledge & Library Hub. Click on the link below to book your place. Exploring the new NHS Knowledge & Library Hub This 60--minute webinar provides a comprehensive introduction to the updated Hub (EBSCO Discovery Service) accessible nationally across NHS England. By the end of this session participants will be able to: Navigate and identify key features of the updated Hub interface Conduct evidence searches using Natural Language to find relevant records Combine search terms and searches for more precise results. Save and export records in RIS and other formats for use with reference management tools Create, store, and retrieve saved records using the MyEBSCO account. Training: Supporting Systematic Reviews using EBSCOhost databases

 Ebsco are running 2 training courses this month. These courses cover the new ebsco database interface and will only be suitable for our Keele University users.
