Register for your NHS OpenAthens username - step-by-step instructions

 NHS staff can register for an NHS OpenAthens account so that they can log on to online resources purchased by the NHS and your library service.

Register for your Account

To register you need to complete the online form.


1. Enter your name


2. Enter your NHS-based email address
Using your NHS address will allow the system to automatically approve you. Otherwise your account will be placed on a list for approval. You won't be able to use resources until your account has been approved. Do not use a personal email address such as gmail or yahoo. We will not be able to verify this or approve the account.


3. Enter your organisation
This is the NHS trust that you work for. You should see suggested options to select once you start typing. We support the following organisations:

  • University Hospitals of North Midlands
  • North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare (try looking for Staffordshire)
  • Primary Care and ICB staff in Staffordshire and Stoke - this includes staff working in GP practices (try looking for Staffordshire)

4. Enter your workplace details
These details are used to verify that your application is valid. Please do not put a home address.


5. Select position duration
If you select “Temporary” you will be prompted for an end date. Enter the date that your contract ends at the organisation your have selected.
All accounts are given an end-date and you will be prompted to renew your account when the date approaches.


6. Confirm you accept the terms and conditions.


7. Click the “Register” button to submit your request.
Once you have submitted your request you will be sent an email. Your username will be set up and you need to complete the instructions in the email to create your password. Please do this promptly as your username may be deleted if not activated with a password.
If your account is awaiting approval you will be informed; once it is approved you will be sent an email.

Article integrity checks for NHS staff

Want to have extra quality and integrity checks for the articles you find? Use library NHS resources and get warnings if the article you're reading fails integrity checks. NHS resources use LibKey to easily point you to subscribed resources. Now LibKey also does a number of integrity checks to help you feel confident with the articles you find. You’ll get warnings about: Retracted articles Retracted article citation (where an article includes references to articles which have been retracted) Expression of concern for the article (where publishers have concerns about some aspect of a published article) Problematic publishers information Warnings are presented at point of access whether from article links in databases or on the web via LibKey Nomad.
