What is it?
The Health Library Training Programme is a schedule of face-to-face training courses, designed to help you to develop your information skills. It is issued every 3 months.

Key Features
The courses available include
  • Health Library Induction Plus – where you can get an introduction to the library facilities, services and resources as well as an overview of some of the most important online healthcare resources.
  • Literature Searching using databases – this course is provided in 2 versions, one covering NHS-based databases and one covering Keele-subscribed databases. You’ll learn how to create a search strategy and apply it to specialist healthcare databases.
  • Evidence-based Databases – this is another course available as either an NHS or Keele version. Here you’ll learn about secondary evidence-based resources such as the Cochrane Library along with others.
  • Critical Appraisal for Beginners – start developing your critical appraisal skills and practice appraising a research paper. You can book on the course to appraise either a qualitative paper or a randomised controlled trial.
  • RefWorks – this course is available to Keele students to help them to get to grips with Refworks, the Keele-subscribed reference manager software.
All our courses are delivered by qualified librarians. They include plenty of opportunity to practice your skills.

BMJ Case Reports from UHNM staff

 BMJ Case Reports is available to UHNM staff both to view full-text and to submit your own case reports. There have been 2 recent case reports submitted by UHNM staff: Penetrating head trauma unbeknown to the patient David Bristow and Shayda Karimi Abstract Penetrating head trauma often leads to significant morbidity or mortality. A man presented to our tertiary centre with concerns of a nail in his brain after work colleagues reviewed closed-circuit television footage which appeared to show a pneumatic nail gun discharging against his head during an incident at work 4 days earlier. Remarkably, the patient reported no symptoms and no clinical signs apart from a small scabbed area on his scalp. A CT scan of his head was performed which showed a 4 cm nail lodged within the parietal lobe of his brain. The patient subsequently underwent a craniotomy with removal of the nail along with antimicrobial cover with antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis. The patient made a full recovery and was...
