Clinical Knowledge Summaries - updates to support primary care #HIW2020

I have been sent the following information, from NICE, regarding Clinical Knowledge Summaries updates for the past 3 months. Clinical Knowledge Summaries are designed to support primary care and provide guidance and recommendations on a wide range of healthcare conditions.

April
A new topic on Coronavirus COVID 19 was created and continuously updated throughout the last 3 months.

Other CKS topics updated in April include:

  • Chest infections – adult –  Links to the COVID-19 management scenario have been added in the Assessment section and the Management of community-acquired pneumonia section to highlight that assessment of suspected chest infection and management of community-acquired pneumonia will differ during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Chest pain – New management scenario created to provide information regarding COVID-19.
  • Chronic kidney disease – New management scenario created to provide information regarding COVID-19.
  • Osteoporosis – prevention of fragility fractures  – The section on interpreting fragility fracture risk scores has been updated to clarify the SIGN recommendation that a 10-year fracture risk of 10% is considered to be the threshold for arranging a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan in men and women.
  • Trichomoniasis – Tinidazole contraindications and cautions for pregnant women updated in line with manufacturer's SPC.
May
CKS topics updated in May include:
  • Anaemia B12 and folate deficiency – recommendations on how to manage people during the COVID-19 pandemic with vitamin B12 deficiency who normally receive intramuscular injections of vitamin B12.
  • Sprains and strains - The section on ‘Prognosis and complications’ will be split into two separate sections. The section on ‘Arranging immediate referral’ will be deleted, and the content incorporated into the section on Management. The ‘Prescribing information’ section will be deleted, and relevant links provided within the content of the Management section. Recommendations will be updated in line with current evidence.
June
The next release will be available from the beginning of July. Updates will include:
  • Angina and Atrial fibrillation - Adverse reactions for diltiazem added in line with updated manufacturer's SPC.
  • Constipation - A recommendation to consider prescribing lubiprostone for people with chronic constipation has been removed as the product has been discontinued.
  • Contraception IUS/IUD - Dizziness added as an adverse effect of levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUS) in line with updated manufacturer's SPC.
  • Teething - Over-the-counter analgesics updated to reflect revised SPC that Bonjela® is not suitable for children under 5 months.
  • Vitiligo - The section on Triggers in the Background section will be incorporated into the section on Causes. The section on Topical corticosteroids will be moved to the section on Management in primary care, to improve navigation. Recommendations will be updated in line with current evidence.
